Paruppu Urundai Kuzhambu (Easy Method) - Paruppu Urundai Puli Kuzhambu

Paruppu Urundai Kuzhambu is an authentic Kuzhambu Recipe, Made with lentils & some Spices. In this Kuzhambu Recipe, lentil balls  are cooked in Spicy tangy Gravy. it May be little time Consuming Recipe, but the final Kuzhambu is just yummy. 

Paruppu Urundai Kuzhambu

For Urundai/Lentil Balls 

Toor dal - 3/4 Cup.

Chana dal - 1/4 cup.

Coconut - 2 tbsp.

Red chillies - 6.

cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp.

Fennel seeds - 1/4 tsp.

Pearl onions - 5.

Coriander leaves - fist ful.

Salt - as Needed.

To Grind 

Coconut - 1/2 cup.

Cashew nuts - 5.

For Gravy

Shallots/Pearl Onions  - 1/2 Cup.

tomato -1.

Garlic - 12.

Tamarind - Gooseberry Size.

Coriander Powder - 1 tsp.

Chilli Powder - 1.5  tsp.

Jaggery - 1/8 tsp.

Salt - as Needed.

To Temper

Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp.

Cumin seeds - 1/4 tsp.

Fennel seeds - 1/4 tsp.

Hing - a Generous Pinch.


1. Soak the Toor dal,Chana dal & Red chillies in

 Needed water, for minimum 2 hours.

2. Soak the tamarind in needed water, for

 minimum 1/2 an hour, throw the pulp & retain

 the water.

How to Make urundai/Lentil Balls

1. First  Grind cumin seeds,fennel seeds,Coconut & salt in a mixie or blender.                                  

 2. Then add  drained & Ground toordal,chana dal & Red chillies, Grind it to a little coarse mixture.

3. Add finely chopped Pearl onions,Coriander leaves with it & Mix well.

4. Now hold  small balls with this coarse lentil mixture & keep it ready. Retain 2 tbsp of this lentil Mixture, for later use. 

5. Add water, to base of the cooker, Grease the idli plate/Plate, Place the balls Gently & steam Cook it for 10 - 12 Minutes. 

Now urundai is Ready.

How to Make Kuzhambu

  1.  Heat the oil, add Mustard seeds.When it Splutters add Cumin seeds,when it sizzles add fenugreek seeds, hing & Curry leaves. Give a Quick Mix.

2. Add Chopped Garlic, Saute till it turns Slightly Golden. Add Chopped Pearl Onions. Saute till it turns Brown. 

3. Add tomatoes, Saute till it turns mushy.

4. Mean while Grind Coconut + Cashews into a fine Paste by adding little water. Now Coconut Paste is Ready.

5. When tomatoes turns mushy, add tamarind juice. Add Needed water, to get kuzhambu consistency. 

6. When it starts boiling add coriander Powder, Chilli Powder & salt.


7. Add Coconut Paste,  Add Remaining 2 tbsp of lentil mixture. Mix well. Let it cook for 3 - 4 minutes.                        

8. Now add lentil balls Gently. Adjust water.(if Gravy is thick add water & bring it to kuzhambu Consistency). 


9. Let it cook in Medium flame for 8 - 10  minutes. After it gets Gravy Consistency. Add jaggery, Give a quick Mix. Switch off the flame. Garnish with fresh cilantro.


1. Instead of chanadal, you can add toor dal alone, to make urundai.
2. Adding lentil mixture, gives thickness to kuzhambu.
