Raw Mango Dal (Andhra Style) - Mamidikaya pappu - kacche aam ki dal

Mamidikaya Pappu  is an authentic Andhra Recipe made is with Toor dal & Raw Mangoes. This is a Good Combination for Chapathi, Roti and Rice.Steamed rice with  Mamidikaya Pappu & Dollop of Ghee taste heavenly.
      Toordal is high in dietary fiber, low in saturated fat, and cholesterol free.  An excellent source of protein and fiber.  When combined with rice you get a complete protein.Green mango can be a good source of vitamin C .Green mango is found to be an effective home remedy for morning sickness. Eating raw mango with little salt would help eliminate nausea for pregnant women.Indian Food may not complete without Garlic. Garlic is most well-known for its antibacterial and antiviral properties. Now we learn to make healthy tasty Mango dal.





Raw Mango Dal 

 Prep Time : 10  min. 
Cook Time : 20 minutes.

Serves : 4. 


Ingredients

Toordal  -  1 cup.
Raw Mango - 3 /4 cup.
water - As needed
Green chillies - 5.
Ginger - 1/2 inch.
turmeric - 1/8 tsp.
cilantro - few.

Tempering

Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp.
cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp.
Garlic - 5.
Red chillies - 2.
curry leaves - 1 sprig
turmeric - 1/8 tsp.
hing - Generous Pinch.

Preparation

  • Crush the Garlic.
  • Chop the Mangoes into cubes.


Method
  • In a wide vessel add Toor dal, cubed Mangoes, Green chillies, Ginger, turmeric & salt  with needed  water and pressure cook it for 5 - 6  whistles till toor dal is soft.(I used nearly 4 cups of water to toor dal).



  • Then mash the dal well with ladle or potato masher.
  • Heat the oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add cumin seeds.
  • When cumin seeds sizzles add Garlic, red chillies,curryleaves,turmeric  and hing.
  • When Garlic turns  light Golden brown colour  add this tempering over cooked dal.


  • Garnish with fresh cilantro.Serve the dal with Rice,chapathi ,Roti & Phulka's.















Notes


  • I used Toor dal alone, but you can use  equal proportion of Toor dal & Moongdal.
  • Adding dal with Raw mangoes takes time to cook.so pressure cook this dal for 5 - 6 whistles.
  • Always crush the Garlic for nice aroma, while tempering.

Tasty dal, I prefer adding rawmango or lemonjuice to dal instead of tamarind.
