Chow Chow Kootu - Chayote Kootu - Chow Chow Kootu Recipe

Chow Chow Kootu is a Popular South Indian Recipe made with Chow Chow, lentils & Spice Powders. This can be served with hot steamed rice or chapathi or Roti.Chow chow control high cholesterol levels. It is rich in antioxidant.It helps in preventing premature Aging.chow chow has various mineral content, so which helps to maintain healthy body & metabolism.






Chow Chow Kootu

Ingredients

Chow Chow - 1 big.
Moong dal - 1/2 Cup.
Turmeric - 1/4 tsp.


To Grind

Coconut - 1/4 Cup.
Chilli Powder - 1 tsp.
Sambar Powder - 1/2 tsp.
Salt - As needed.
Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp.
fried gram(Putnala Pappu) - 1  tbsp.

To Temper

Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp.
Urad dal - 1 tsp.
hing - a Generous Pinch.
Curry leaves - 1 sprig.
oil - to fry.

Preparation

Peel the skin of Chow chow. Remove the  seeds  from it .Then Cut the Chow Chow into Cubes.

Grind the items in 'To Grind' Column into a smooth Paste with little water & keep it aside.


Method

  • Take a  small Cooker, add Moong dal,Cubed Chow Chow & turmeric.Add  nearly 1 + 1/2 Cups of water such a way that chow chow immerse in water.

  • Pressure Cook for 3 whistles.
  • Once the pressure subsides open the lid  add ground Paste .
  • Again switch on the stove, bring it to boil & cook for few minutes,till it gets little   thick Consistency & switch off the stove.

  • Now heat the oil add mustard seeds when it splutters add urad dal & curry leaves. When dal turns Golden brown colour add hing,  & Pour the tadka over the kootu & mix well.
  • Now kootu is ready to serve with Rice,Chapathi or Roti.


Notes

  • Instead of Chilli Powder, you can replace with Red chillies also.
  • Instead of Moong dal, you can use toor dal also.if using toor dal pressure cook it seperately.
  • you can also use a mix of Moong dal & toor dal or Moong dal & chanadal for variations.
  • Instead of fried Gram you can use a tsp of Rice flour.
