Hitikida Avarekalu Gravy - Mochai Gravy - Side dish for Poori,chapathi & Dosa

 Avarekalu Gravy is an Authentic Gravy Recipe made with pearl onions & some Spices. it Pairs well with chapathi,Poori,dosa & Roti. This is  a Mild spicy Gravy. Avarekalu is an Winter Season Bean, In some places we get frozen Beans too. When we lived in chicago, we got frozen Beans. Hitikida means pressed, this a pressed Avarekalu Sagu.

serves  :   3. 


Avarekalu/field beans  - 1 Cup (pressed) .

Pearl onions - 1/4 Cup.

To Roast & Grind

Coriander seeds - 1 tbsp.

Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp.

Red chillies - 4.

To Grind 

Coconut - 1/4 cup.

Poppy seeds - 1.5 tsp.

To Temper

Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp.

Fennel seeds - 1/2 tsp.

oil - to fry.


Soak the Fresh  field beans  for 4 to 5 hrs in water.Then the skin of  Field beans will becomes soft.Then, drain the water, & hold the beans between your hands, & press gently as shown in the picture, outer skin will come out, leaving the inner seed. similarly remove the skin for all seeds.

Remove skin of onions & chop it. 


1. Heat the oil, add mustard seeds. When it splutters add fennel seeds. saute it,till it turns aromatic.

2. Add Pearl onions. Saute till it turns Golden Brown.

3. Add field beans, saute for 2 minutes,then add needed water. Let it boil for few minutes, till it  turns soft. It takes nearly 8 to 10 minutes, to cook. Cook it covered for fast cooking.

3. Meanwhile add a tsp of oil, in a kadai.  Add cumin seeds, when it sizzles, add coriander seeds & Red chillies. Saute till coriander seeds  are roasted  &  turns aromatic. Then switch off the flame. 


when it cools down , Grind this Roasted Mixture along with coconut & poppy seeds. Add needed water & Grind  into a smooth Paste. 

Now Ground paste is Ready.

5. When field beans are cooked add this Ground paste(adjust Water), add Needed salt.

6. Let it cook for few minutes, till raw smell Goes off, &  it gets Gravy consistency. Garnish with Fresh cilantro.
