Vazhiapoo Usili - Banana Flower usili

Banana flower/ vazhiapoo - 1
 channa dal - 1/4 cup
 Toor dal - 1/4 cup
 Green chillies - 2, Red chillies 2.
 salt as needed.
 hing - generous pinch.


Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
urad dal 1 tsp
 curry leaves 1 sprig
 oil - as needed.


  • Soak channa dal & toor dal with needed water for 2 hours.
  • Clean vazhiapoo poo , chop it & put in butter milk to avoid discoloration. 
  • Heat kadai add little turmeric, put chopped florets, cook till it is soft.then drain it & keep aside.

  • Drain & grind Dal's into a coarse paste with g.chillies, r.cillies, salt & hing. Steam cook like we make thattu idli or normal idli in idli plates for 15 min. 

  • When it  coolsdown crumble using mixie in a whipper mode as shown in pic.

  • Heat oil, add Mustard seeds, when it crackles add urad dal, curry leaves saute till dal turns golden brown, add crumbled dal saute for 3 - 4 min, then add cooked vazhiapoo , stir for 2 - 3 min, till it combines well.

  •  Serve hot with steamed rice, Rasam, or more kuzhambu or majiga pulusu.
