Cabbage Kootu - Easy Cabbage Kootu

Cabbage Kootu is an Easy & Simple South Indian Kootu Recipe made with  fresh Cabbage, Moongdal & some spices. This is a healthy Kootu Recipe Goes well with hot Rice,Chapathi,Roti or Phulka's. Cabbage is rich in fiber & Vitamin C.Cabbage is rich in antioxidant.Cabbage acts as a Good de toxifier.It purifies the blood & removes toxins.It is also a Powerful Immune Booster.Now we will see the preparation of South Indian style  Cabbage Kootu.

                                                         


Cabbage Kootu

Ingredients


Cabbage  -  2 Cups.
Moong dal - 1/4 Cup.
Turmeric - 1/4 tsp.


To Grind

Coconut - 1/4 Cup.
Red Chillies - 3 tsp.
Salt - As needed.
Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp.
Cashews  - 12.


To Temper

Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp.
hing - a Generous Pinch.
Curry leaves - 1 sprig.
Pearl Onions - 8.
oil - to fry.

Preparation

Chop or shred  the cabbage finely.

Grind the items in 'To Grind' Column into a smooth Paste with little water & keep it aside.


Method

  • Take a  small Cooker, add Moong dal,Cabbage & turmeric.Add  nearly 1 + 1/2 Cups of water such a way that cabbage  immerse in water.

  • Pressure Cook for 3 whistles.
  • Once the pressure subsides open the lid  add ground Paste & a Cup of water .
  • Again switch on the stove, bring it to boil & cook for few minutes,till it gets slightly  thick Consistency & switch off the stove.

    • Now heat the oil add mustard seeds when it splutters add curry leaves,crushed Pearl onions. When Pearl Onions  turns Golden brown colour add hing,  & Pour the tadka over the kootu & mix well.


    • Now kootu is ready to serve with Rice,Chapathi or Roti.


    Notes

    • Instead of Red chillies you can replace with Chilli Powder also.
    • Instead of Moong dal, you can use toor dal also.if using toor dal pressure cook it seperately.
    • you can also use a mix of Moong dal & toor dal or Moong dal & chanadal for variations.
    • Adding Cashews gives nice flavour & also it is a Good thickening agent.
